Hemp : an ally in preserving the Haras’ authenticity.
From the outset, it was essential to find a solution that would allow the historic walls to breathe while ensuring effective thermal and acoustic insulation.
Hemp blocks were used at various levels :
- IsoHemp 25 cm blocks to line interior walls, ensuring natural insulation without altering the building’s appearance.
- Partitions with IsoHemp 20 cm blocks, enhancing thermal and moisture regulation.
- Prefabricated hemp lintels, allowing smooth integration with the existing structure.
- HL Mix granules for infill, optimising cohesion between old elements and new solutions.
In addition to improving comfort for future users, the use of hemp helps reduce the project’s carbon footprint, aligning with RE 2020, which encourages the use of bio-based materials in heritage renovations.

An exemplary site under high standards.
With more than 2,340 m² of walls to insulate, the project’s complexity lies in balancing preservation and innovation.
As Xavier Mouradian, Heritage Director at Deluermoz, explains, the goal was to respect the 19th-century architecture while ensuring modern comfort for future users.
« Preserving the façades was key: we chose a lime render finished with a limewash, which respects the building’s appearance and ensures durability. »
Inside, integrating hemp blocks required precise work, particularly to adapt architectural elements such as arched lintels.
This level of complexity called for expertise, supported by continuous technical guidance.
A strong commitment to sustainable renovation.
This project is about more than restoring a historic building. It aims to make the Haras d’Annecy a model of sustainable renovation, combining heritage, ecology and innovation.
Beyond insulation, the site also prioritises biodiversity preservation, with optimised water management and conservation of adjacent natural spaces.
The goal is to create a place where culture and nature coexist in harmony, offering Annecy’s residents a unique living environment.
A landmark project for heritage’s future.
Scheduled for completion in September 2025, the renovation of the Haras d’Annecy is set to become a visionary and respectful restoration model.
This project perfectly illustrates how IsoHemp hemp blocks help modernise historic buildings without compromising their soul, while meeting environmental and energy challenges.
