Forest gate mews: A model of modern sustainability.
In the London neighborhood of Forest Gate, a special project by architect Cathie Curran and Hub Construction Services has come to fruition. This three-story house follows the typical construction style of "Mews Houses" often seen in London. Utilizing the Hempro system with 36 cm hemp blocks in harmony with a steel structure, the new construction stands as a testament to a modern, sustainable, and resource-based lifestyle, setting a new standard for urban living. This project serves as an example to architects and builders, proving that sustainable choices are not only viable but also entirely suited to contemporary construction.
The Mews House is situated on a site formerly occupied by a single-story garage. At the core of this new construction lies the use of IsoHemp hemp blocks, chosen for their exceptional insulation properties and minimal environmental impact. These hemp blocks, combined with a steel and wood structure, form a sturdy framework for the house. Combinations of these natural materials (hemp, oak, accoya, and terracotta) bring warmth and character.
Biosourced practices in modern construction.
Cathie Curran's decision to use hemp blocks was motivated by her commitment to environmentally friendly construction practices. These 36 cm hemp concrete blocks provide superior thermal and acoustic insulation compared to conventional materials, while significantly reducing the carbon footprint of the house. This choice reflects the growing trend among architects to prioritize sustainability without compromising on aesthetics or functionality.
Mews house in hemp blocks: A perfect harmony
The façade of the Mews House is comprised of various materials, including dark wood panels that can be opened for ventilation, hemp blocks covered with lime plaster, and terracotta tiles. This blend is not only aesthetic but also renders the house adaptable and sturdy.
Upon entering the house, the hallway is composed of oiled oak and a concrete floor that recalls the site's industrial past. The use of hemp blocks is particularly showcased in the kitchen, where their natural texture is emphasized by leaving them exposed and only covered with a thin layer of natural PCS plaster.
The choice of natural materials for finishes creates a cozy and serene atmosphere that contrasts with urban life. It's about bringing a bit of nature into our homes.
A model of sustainable urban living.
Cathie Curran also looked to the future by designing the Mews House in a way that it could be divided into two apartments if necessary. This demonstrates an understanding of the evolving needs of city dwellers and the adaptability of hemp blocks.
This Mews house made of hemp blocks serves as a model for future projects, showcasing how innovative use of materials can revolutionize urban living, offering a sustainable, adaptable, and beautiful solution for modern habitat. It's a call to action for architects, builders, and homeowners to consider how to do things differently.
